We took our kid to Science City at Union Station for the first time on Saturday, Abuela was up visiting us from Mexico and we all popped into the car and drove up to Union Station. Nothing has made me more excited for the streetcar to get here than this outing.
After my son’s nap we all loaded ourselves into the car, even as the weather was finally starting to warm up walking was difficult as snow and ice still blocked the sidewalks. So made the short drive with everyone up to Union Station.
This was a mistake.
I believe there must have been an event happening in the grand hall, which is not unusual for Union Station. The parking garage took longer to get in and out of than walking would have taken, further our kid was so tired afterward that the walk plus streetcar would have been a perfect naptime on the way back home.
Science City is great but weirdly designed to be the only place you go in Union Station, why no place to grab a snack inside, or at minimum Harvey’s in Union Station should stay open a bit later. Union Station is in serious need of an all day food place. Imagine how much nicer staying at Science City would be if you could grab a hot dog, a coke or a beer and get your kids out of the craziness for half an hour, then after they’ve chilled out they can head back in.
Either way can’t wait until the streetcar gets here, it would have made this day a superb outing. We became Union Station members so we’ll be in and out of there many times a year. Particularly looking forward to taking a Wednesday off sometime taking the kid up to Science City, then having some oysters and a martini at Pierpont’s afterward.
Tip we didn’t really think about, we were hungry after Union Station and as everything besides movie snacks or Pierpont’s was closed by 4:30 (a giant miss for Union Station btw) so we drove down to Anthony’s and on a Saturday even at 4:30 they didn’t have tables, so plan ahead for reservations.
