I happen to be fortunate enough to live in a place where my kids daycare is directly between where I work and where I live and doesn’t add too much time to my morning walk. If you are like me and enjoy walking places, and dislike being tied to a car, this is a godsend. Jeff Speck does an excellent job of explaining what a useful walk is, I would highly recommend watching his videos on it, because it will make everything you have always intuitively known and liked about walking placed make rational sense.
Thanks to the recent traffic calming measures on 31st street, walking up 31st no longer feels so awful. It will only get better as the Streetcar Lofts get built in the empty lots up 31st street. There are only a few areas with out tree cover, and there are plenty of varied and interesting architecture, landscaping, and views along the way.
Daycare is about 10 minutes up on 30th and Main, and I can then walk another 20 minutes down the hill to Crown Center. There is for the most part decent tree cover the entire way, and even though the hill is large, it makes for interesting views going down and up.
I hope more daycares are able to put themselves in areas like ours.
