I am exuberant about the quality of life increase the KC Streetcar Riverfront extension will make for our family. We got a preview of the fine things to come while attending the KC Current match for Mother’s Day this year.
My wife had the excellent desire to attend the KC Current v Bay City game this Mother’s Day, so we made that happen. The weather was perfect, the match was exciting, as always the KC Current game experience was wonderful, but most exciting for me was the palpable sense of the amount of fun we are on the brink of having once the streetcar extension to the Riverfront is complete.
We met up with a large group of my family. Our family, my brother’s family, and two sets of grandparents all came along for the fun. We had a great day.
Parking is very limited near the Stadium so we had to take 4 cars and met up downtown at 7th and Main to utilize the shuttle service the KC Current provides. We were all able to park, meet up, que up then grab the shuttle service up to the Riverfront. It was as easy as that can be, yet was a giant hassle.
However, the outline of what was to come was palpable. Even the grandparents who enjoy suburban living out in Overland Park commented on how much better this is about to become. You know they are building something great when your parents comment on the fact that “next year we can just meet at your place and head down here and it will be so easy!”
Two Birds One Stone appears to be complete. It is likely they are just waiting on government licensing approvals (shame on the government for taking so damn long but that is another post).
As we walked by my mind transported into the future. I saw myself sipping a cold beer on a warm day at Two Birds One Stone watching the river pass by as we hung out with my family on their patio while the kids ran around the park having a blast. I saw the outlines of the buildings we will walk by on shaded walkways surrounded by human scale architecture and eye-catching landscaping as we strolled up to CPKC Stadium.
After the match we got a taste of the fun that will happen next year. The shuttle lines after the match were quite long so we decided to walk the Riverfront trail up to the heritage bridge and grab the streetcar at the Delaware stop. As we neared the trail underpass, we were all a bit hot so we decided to pop into BarK to grab a nice cold beverage and let the kids rest while hanging out and further enjoying the day.
Next Season we will be able to walk from our home and grab the streetcar at 31st street, then take it to the Riverfront and walk up to the stadium, hang out on the Riverfront afterward, then grab the streetcar back home.
Picturing the type of day our family can have on any random weekend once the Riverfront Extension is complete, while getting to see the outline of what KC is on the brink of experiencing was exhilarating.
